Popular Newcastle brand ‘Jalou’ opens in York City Centre

Jalou York has arrived! Located in central York, minutes away from the Station, Jalou is the latest addition to the cities night life scene. APTUS received instruction from our client to deliver this high-end fit-out to the already stunning grade II listed church. With incredible period features, Jalou York plays the perfect Gothic setting as the sister of one of Newcastle’s most popular cocktail bars.

The Grade II listed, 11th century church that had formerly been ‘The Parish’ was purchased by its new owners in 2016. Earlier this year we were instructed by the client to undertake the works on this project. Prior to the building being opened as a bar in 2005 it was known as the York Arts Centre following its closure as a church in 1934. The former Parish also holds a well known tourist attraction and piece of its past life, a tomb belonging to a long-deceased knight called Sir Richard Yorke.

We began the project in March 2017 with a ten-week Programme and completed successfully in May 2017. The newly refurbished bar is 558m2 and occupies 2 floors. With a delicate strip-out around the listed areas, we carefully removed all existing bars, toilets, kitchens, main staircase, banquette seating, floor finishes and M&E. The floor finishes were replaced with new carpet as well as ceramic tiles to the remaining areas. The ceramic tiles specified were sourced from a small town called Moncofar in Valencia, Spain. The tiles were used in various parts of the building and enhance the distinctive features of the church to create an architectural prowess between past and present.

As the building is listed there were parts of the former church that could not be refurbished. Decoration works for example were carried out through the whole building, however the existing superstructure remained untouched due to regulations. The old banquette seating in the bar was removed and completely replaced with new. The main bar was also taken out and replaced along with a new bar on the second floor creating a unique VIP area. Both bars feature polished brass elevations that gave a quilt effect along with mirror frames and LED lighting to give a remarkable result. The jewel of the crown on this project is the bespoke lighting system that is suspended 3 meters above the dance floor. The system is fully digital and is linked to the audio-visual systems creating striking displays throughout the club.
